When most people think of Durham, North Carolina, the first thing that comes to mind is Duke University. Yes, this world renowned university is a huge part of Durham, but there is much more to this city for both locals and tourists alike! The city's cultural heart is thriving and if you visit you will find a variety of delicious restaurants to choose from, as well as a vibrant jazz scene in many city nightclubs.

One of the coolest attractions in Durham is the American Tobacco Trail. It was originally built to house a railroad route for the American Tobacco Company in the 70's, but was since abandoned and is now a trail for bikers, joggers and walkers. The American Tobacco Trail is a total of 22 square miles long, but only about seven miles of it runs through the city of Durham. The sections of the trail outside the city limits are open to horseback riders, as well.

Bennett Place, or Bennett Farm as some people call it, is another place you should visit in Durham. History buffs will know that Bennett place was the site of the biggest surrender of confederate soldiers during the Civil War on April 26, 1865. This is a great place to see passionate Civil War re-enactors at work. They dress, act, talk and, yes, even smell just like someone would during the Civil War. They take great pains to make sure every detail is authentic and are a great, interactive way to learn about United States history.

If you like lemurs, and how could you not, you must take a trip to Duke University's Lemur Center. Tours are available by appointment only, so make sure you call ahead.  Lemurs you can see at the Center include black & white ruffed, blue-eyed, collared brown, red-bellied, ringtail and many others.

These are just some of the exciting things to do in Durham, North Carolina. Stop by for a visit sometime!
